2011-2012 Courses for first year ATS students

These are the expected courses for the first-year ATS students (for the 2011-2012 academic year). Courses in brackets are optional courses that some ATS or PO students have taken in the past. Students only need to take these if needed for their research. The braces indicate my editorializing of the absolutely-required-right-now courses for each quarter. If any of the new students follow the proposed, more flexible M.S. course requirements (which Chris will write up), they will have a little bit of flexibility here.

------------------ 2011-2012 --------------

Fall:
OEAS 500 or OC 599 - field courses before Fall quarter [required COAS core]
OEAS 530 - Fluid Earth [required COAS core]
OEAS 520 - Solid Earth [required COAS core]
[OC 670 - Fluid Dynamics]
[OC 599 - Matlab]
[Math 581 - I know some PO students take this, not sure if any ATS students have]
[Other PO/Math courses?]
{Some students may defer OEAS 520 to next year if their research would benefit from taking an optional course, though this is not recommended. ALL ATS students should take OEAS500/OC599 and OEAS 530 at least! 99.9% will also take OEAS 520. OC 670 is pretty common for people doing dynamics.}

Winter:
ATS 511 - Thermodynamics and Cloud Physics -- de Szoeke [required ATS core]
ATS 513 - Atmospheric Chemistry -- Vong [required ATS core]
OEAS 540 -BGC - [required COAS core]
[ATS 520 - Principles of Climate -- Shell]
[OC 671 - GFD]
[Other PO/Math courses?]
{Some students may defer required courses to next year if their research would benefit from taking an optional course. ATS 511 might not be offered next year, so I recommend all ATS students take it this academic year, unless their MS program does not require it.}

Spring:
ATS 515 - Large-scale Atmospheric Dynamics -- Barnes [required ATS core]
ATS 512 - Atmospheric Radiation -- Coakley [required ATS core]
[OC 682 - Data Analysis]
[Other PO/Math courses?]
{ALL students should take both ATS 515 and 512 because they may not be offered next year, unless their MS program does not require one of them.}

Don't forget the required COAS seminar credits! (ATS seminar credits not required.)

Whatever required/optional courses not taken previous year +

Fall
[ATS 564 - Atmosphere/Vegetation Interaction -- Thomas, conflicts with OEAS 530 in Fall 2011]

Spring (I think)
ATS small-scale atm dynamics [required ATS core]
